What helped me to understand the role of the Church and the Kingdom of God was found in Matt. 16:18-20. This the "Peter rock of the Church passage." In verse 19, Jesus says, "I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven..." I was meditating on this passage a couple of weeks ago and it caused me to think about the Church as being a place where we are unlocking the Kingdom of God upon a certain people. It was around that time that I saw Narnia. I don't know if your post was asking rhetorical questions but for the most part I like to think of the Kingdom of God all the attributes (ascetic, promises and even cosmic war as siege) pointing to the king, all giving glory to the father. I think this is the beauty of the Kingdom and faith. In faith we are given the capacity to see the unseen. A place where all thing are new, a place of hope, a place of courage, a place of love.

And we as the church have the opportunity to unlock that beauty with our words, our actions, and our love. Therefore, rather than seeing the Kingdom as an institution (Catholic Church), we experience the Kingdom of God being unleashed on to others. This I believe is why the prophets longed to understand this “salvation” and the angels can barely comprehend it (1 Peter 1).

I didn't want to try to answer your questions as I reread the rhetorical nature of the question but maybe I just needed to be reminded myself today. Much love Travis... Much love... Maybe it's your quest that encourages me today...

the questions are not neccesarily rhetorical in nature. i see where they may be read as such but opinions differ greatly from person to person on this issue.

I just read yesterday Goldworthy's definition of the Kingdom of God. "God's people, under God's rule, in God's place." Kind of boring to me. Just a thought. I'd like to hear more of what you are thinking.

1 Corinthians 4:20For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a gentle spirit?

Kingdom of God is of power. Not the kind of power you get from a whip but the kind you get from love and a gentle spirit. The Kingdom of God it is not a matter of talk, it is spread through actions love. Not just looking at a homeless person or a person infected with AIDS and saying I love you. That is a matter of talk, the power of the love comes from the gentle spirit that walks along side of these people and show the love of God in a real and physical way.
